Last year when I saw the first race of Austin I took a good feeling and I found a very entertaining race, something that did not happen this time. Last year the circuit debut and prevented new asphalt tire temperature cogiesen, which gave enough emotion. This year, the asphalt was already settled and could make a stop, and those races to a pit-stop usually boring. That's what happened with Bridgestone, which it made it very predictable and durable shoes. Pirelli has threatened that if the FIA does not allow training, them for the next season will show durable tires without. Watching the bats have received this season, no wonder, and it seems logical request. further, Pirelli now not develop gums with Formula 1 of this year, but it has an outdated model 2010, which further complicates design. As I read somewhere, the best combination is the one that was at the beginning of this season: very fast tires, but they degraded quickly. By the way, Women in sport have been used primarily as vases, not only here but they have not received equal treatment. Science and history also keep the place deserved for females, and there are many inventions and scientific developments carried out by women who have been forgotten. The first historical tribute of this column goes to Stephanie Kwolek, Polish-American scientist still alive who developed the famous kevlar, which it is used today in the Pirelli and flak jackets, among other applications. We continue with Pirelli, It is that this weekend has to speak the nth detail advantage over rivals Red Bull. Specifically, It has commented that the Austrian team employs polysil, a polymer applied on the tire rim improves heat transfer. It is one of computer keys: rapid heating in the first laps. It is polysil which it is a thin film silicon based also favors the turbulence generated in this area of the car. Anyway, he polysil It is the trade name of a company called Nanoprom, and is Italian, so it would not surprise me Ferrari and other teams also employ this product, and possibly it is being used before this year. And you can not forget that a great advantage is efficiency in pit-stops; this weekend again set a record by making the change wheels 1,9 seconds. Although primarily it is talking about a possible delay in the engine cylinders, but that I'll talk another day, Nor should we believe absolutely everything that appears online. This week has also given to local news, although not exactly positive. Joan Villadelprat has been convicted for the crime of concealment of assets, specifically for selling equipment Epsilon Euskadi to Epic Racing at a price much lower than during the previous two years before the bankruptcy filing. 900.000 euro fine and three years' disqualification. It is another pending trial for 22 November where he will study whether Catalan and his partner incurred criminal offenses. But I do not want so close local news, and here is the second column tribute. Pepe Díez died this month. Probably few people remember him, but it pioneered retransmissions of Formula 1 in TVE over the years 80, and an expert in technical knowledge and ability to transmit fans. Poor penetration of Formula 1 during that time and the difficulty to rescue audios you have been relegated to oblivion. Rest in peace.

Wheel rim coatings to heat the tyres

Posted by on Nov 22, 2013 in PRESS | Comments Off on Wheel rim coatings to heat the tyres

By Steven De Groote on 22 Nov 2013, 12:29

Even though it’s been known for a while, recent thermal imagery has shown the true effects of rim coatings to manage tyre temperatures. The coatings were first photographed on Mercedes AMG’s Advanti wheels, featuring dimples on the inside of the rim as well (inset). Later on, Red Bull was confirmed to also use a similar treatment of their OZ Racing wheels, although in their case the inside of the wheels features grooves rather than dimples. Ferrari meanwhile are said to be coating their OZ Racing wheels as well. It was recently also found out that the black coating is actually Polysil, produced by Nanoprom near Sassuola, Italy. It is a solvent based product containing polymers of silicium, mainly designed to protect all sorts of materials against surface friction. The product is typically sprayed to create a film of only a few microns to reach hardnesses of up to 9H. This is achieved mainly by letting the product fill up tiny gaps in the imperfect wheel surface, creating a very smooth result that may also help to reduce turbulence within the wheel. Its black colour however is interesting for teams as that will help for the rim to absorb heat from the brakes into the Magnesium alloy wheel itself. As the rim itself has a very high thermal conductivity, the heat going into the metal is then spread rapidly throughout its entire body and partially transferred into the tyre through the tyre bead. As a result, it is possible for teams to keep the tyres at a more constant temperature, reducing the rapid drop of temperature of the tyres when running on long straights. Instead, with the rim properly warmed up, the tyre wall is kept warm, preventing the tyre’s thread to cool off too quickly. The net result is more grip at turn-in as the tyres haven’t cooled down as much as without the treatment. The thermal images in the inset show how this works brilliantly for Red Bull Racing. All three are shots from an onboard camera on Sebastian Vettel’s car at Circuit of the Americas during Q1 at the US Grand Prix. The first is taken on approach to turn 19, the second shows the turn-in point on turn 19, and the one below shows him at the end of the pit straight, before braking. It is evident that in all three images, the rim is relatively warm, and that by the end of the straight, the tyres are still lighting up across the entire thread’s width. Similar images from Mercedes AMG show similar, but less pronounced effects, while on the Ferrari the wheel was not marked as hot by the thermal camera, indicating a lower temperature than with the other teams. Even though it is still early days and nobody knows yet what will be the operating temperatures of the new ‘conservative’ Pirelli tyres, it is nonetheless very likely that this technology will continue to be used in 2014. Even more so, with Nanoprom citing the possibility to use their coatings on composites and aluminium, it is nearly sure that it is or will be used on parts of the engine as well.

Use spy / technical tests 2014

The world is over, but all over the paddock engineers are damning their souls for the crumbs of second place.
Despite the performance of Ferrari, It must recognize that designers in Maranello are not standing still.
For the American trip Ferrari has brought a new front wing has two blowholes on forward flap in the part farthest from the side plate which has a slightly curved shape up.
During the free practice were tested once again the switches of the bridge to flow to the side plates in front of which, however, were once again set aside.
At the rear you were chosen by a high load downforce configuration characterized by a rear wing with a leading edge very pronounced and a fairly high median curvature. The blowholes present on the upper part of the side plate are five and was confirmed, also, the small slot in the lower part of the wing itself. To further maximize the load downforce shall also be used monkeyseat connected to the lower profile of the rear wing. Under the nose of the turningvanes three elements were chosen.
We talked last week on the use by Red Bull Polysil realized by Nanoprom Sassuolo. From Austin images it is noticed that also Ferrari uses this specific material within their own circles.
Important to note that, some teams, as Red Bull and Mercedes over Polysil to add a sort of knurling inside the circles that has the function of limiting the turbulence that are generated in this very sensitive area for 'overall aerodynamics of the car.
The ruler of the weekend and second parts of the world was the Red Bull. No major news to report on the car Newey has confirmed that the proven front wing for the first time during free practice of the GP of India and, afterwards, used by both drivers at the Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi.Le main feature of this version of the wing that does differentiate from proceeding model are drifts located upstream of the forward flap (yellow circle), and warped slightly larger than the previous model.
How often it is going on in these last races, the pilots of Red Bull were shot with different load levels at the rear. As you can see from the photo below, Vettel used the rear wing more download than his teammate Webber.
The two wings are differentiated by the shape of the main profile while it is exactly equal in blowholes on the upper part of the bulkhead (five) and in the slit in the lower part.
On Red Bull has views, in the back area, a modification to the bodywork in the area of the large oval vent in the part of the bodywork terminal stessa.Questo vent is used to cool in the best way the rear part of the car and above the shift area where Newey has also positioned part of the battery used to power the kers.
As you can see from the below comparison now the outburst has a perfectly oval whereas before it had a slightly different design and, in the upper part presented, a small flare (green rectangle).
Red Bull on the thing that has aroused most interest is the excessive decline in the T-Tray area.
When the car is lowered by trestles, after replacing tires, the knife touches the bottom area and causes an incredible T-Tray mount deformation. It 's really amazing how RB9 able to overcome the very strict controls imposed by the FIA in this particular area of the car while having a very flexible knife zone.
We recall that Article 3.17.5 the technical regulations of the FIA, the fund must not flex more than a certain value (5 mm under a vertical load of 2000N is applied in three different points of the bottom and side of the center line at a distance of 100mm).

Posted by on Nov 18, 2013 in PRESS | Comments Off on GP. United States: Ferrari also use the Polysil

There had already spoken before the Singapore Grand Prix on the use of Polysil the rims to try to bring to the correct temperature in a short time the tires Discovered the material used inside of the rims: It called Polysil.

The images seen today at the Austin box we can see that Ferrari uses this material that is produced by a company in Sassuolo called Nanoprom.

some teams, as Red Bull and Mercedes over Polysil to add a sort of knurling inside the circles that has the function of limiting the turbulence that are generated in this very sensitive area for 'overall aerodynamics of the car.
