Several MotoGP teams experimented with a white front rim during the first half of the season 2022. At Suzuki, one was seen in free practice for the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello. Before that time, a white rim was tried at Aprilia. What is it about?
“We were the first to use a white rim in Indonesia”, says Aprilia driver Aleix Espargaro, which explains that it lowers the temperature in the front tire: “The MotoGP field is so tight these days. two degrees [Celsius] makes a big difference.”
“You can't even imagine it. One time the motor has an incredible amount of chatter. And then [with less temperature in the front tire] is alles plots perfect. It's just crazy how much difference it makes,” Espargaro is surprised, “It's just a result of how balanced everything is in today's MotoGP. “
As for Aprilia, was the use described by Espargaro during the Indonesia weekend of 2022 indeed the first use of a white rim during a race weekend. But they came up with the idea much earlier. "We first tried it two years ago on a test day in Mugello when it was extremely hot", remembers the Aprilia driver.
